Bathrooms fail quietly. The tile can look fine for years while water gets behind it, and by the time a stain shows up on the ceiling below, the damage has been building the whole time. That is why the work that matters most in a bathroom remodel is the part nobody sees once it is done: the waterproofing membrane behind the shower tile, the slope of the shower pan toward the drain, and the flashing where the tub or shower meets the wall.

The visible order of work goes demo, then any plumbing relocation, then waterproofing, then tile, then fixtures, then grout and caulk. Skipping or rushing the waterproofing step is the single most common reason a bathroom remodel fails within a few years instead of lasting decades.

Humidity is the other factor that gets overlooked. Pittsburgh summers are humid enough that a bathroom without a properly vented exhaust fan, one that actually ducts to the outside instead of just into the attic, will grow mold in the grout lines regardless of how good the tile work is. Ask what waterproofing system is being used, ask where the exhaust fan vents to, and ask whether the shower pan will be sloped and tested before tile goes over it.

How it runs

  1. Demo Old tile, fixtures, and any water damaged subfloor or drywall are removed.
  2. Plumbing rough in Supply and drain lines are set or moved to match the new layout.
  3. Waterproofing Membrane goes over shower walls and the pan is sloped and tested before any tile is set.
  4. Tile Floor and wall tile are set, cut, and leveled, with niches and trim pieces placed as designed.
  5. Fixtures and finishing Vanity, toilet, fan, and hardware go in, followed by grout and caulk once everything has cured.
